The start of it all
Why am I on Medium? Good question; until last Friday I didn’t even know this platform existed.
I guess three important dates led me here:
- May 7th, 2020: my wife and I welcomed our baby girl to the world
- January 6th, 2021: the US Capitol was stormed
- January 22nd, 2021: my buddy recommended the Medium platform to me
The first date really got me thinking about true responsibility and also about very-long-term-things. Responsibility because there’s now a little human in our house always in need of something and very-long-term-things because our daughter will most likely live into the 22nd century and I find myself thinking about what the world will look like for her and our grandkids, long after my wife and I are gone.
The second date really shook me to the core and got me thinking about how things can steadily keep getting worse in a country until they’re at a breaking point. I think January 6th was that breaking point for the US. My current standpoint is that the events from that day were caused by decades of poor, disconnected or corrupt leadership at all levels of government which ultimately led to millions of very frustrated citizens getting latched onto a conman’s empty promises that he could fix all of their problems. And on January 6th, a few thousand of those frustrated citizens heeded his words to march on the Capitol to “put pressure” on Congress while they were counting the electoral votes. You all know what happened next.
I firmly believe that it is our duty as citizens to make sure that what happened on January 6th at the Capitol never happens again, and I believe that one of the sure-fire ways to do this is to get the government back to effectively working for its people. This idea isn’t a new one, but I’d like to be a part of the discussion and last week after hearing me out my buddy really pushed me towards getting something started here on Medium. I plan on humbly calling it “The Silver Bullet Series”, because I believe that any one of these things by themselves would do a lot to get the government back on track to doing what it should do best: serving the American people.
Till next time.
